The Ninth Day of Christmas - The Music of Verdi

"Nine Ladies Dancing......"

Never could figure out why nine ladies were dancing by themselves.... but then I have attended enough wedding receptions to recognize that women love to dance and do it much better than the male of the species! But keeping to the theme of music, on this Ninth Day of Christmas, I offer my readers the majesty of Giuseppe Verdi, the King of Italian Opera.

Most folks know Verdi's operas from his Middle Period (Rigoletto, Traviata, Trovatore) or the Late Period (Don Carlos, Aida, Otello and Falstaff). It is the operas from Verdi's Early Period that are filled with endless melody and spectacular cabalettas. Such an example is the aria "Ah, fu giusto il mio sospetto" from the First Act of Luisa Miller (1849). Here it is sung by my childhood idol, Sherrill Milnes, from a 1979 Great Performance telecast from The Metropolitan Opera in New York. I'll wager those 'nine ladies' would not only dance but swoon to Milnes' gorgeous baritone voice.

A prayer for the season of Christmas:

Sanctify our souls, O God. Purify our bodies. Correct our minds; cleanse our thoughts; and deliver us from all tribulations, evil, and distress. Surround us with Thy holy angels; that, guided and guarded by them, we may attain to the unity of the faith, and unto the knowledge of Thine unapproachable glory. For Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.
