Lent 2 - The Sunday Musical Offering - Brahms Symphony No 1 C Minor

Today being a feast day in the Lenten Journey, an epic work by Johannes Brahms. It took the great composer over 21 years to complete his First Symphony (compared to only four months to write his Second Symphony). It is a cathartic piece of music that begins in the minor and ends four movements later in the bright sunshine of the major key with a chorale that is worthy of Beethoven. Here is the first portion of the Symphony No. 1, first movement, with Bernstein and the members of the Israeli Philharmonic.

Now the climatic final movement filled with hope, light, and joy. This is nineteenth century symphonic writing at its very best. Again, Bernstein at the helm but this time with the Vienna Philharmonic.
